Rudolph Agricola: Six Lives and Erasmus's Testimonies The Frisian humanist Rudolph Agricola (1443-1485) is rightly famous for single-handedly bringing the Italian Renaissance to the North. Owing to his fascinating personality and many talents, he attracted the love and admiration of his contemporaries and the following generations. As a result, six biographies on Agricola have been preserved. The authors of these lives drew their materials from different sources and wrote their texts independently from each other. Differing vastly in rhetorical aims and methods, they provide us with a vivid image of cultural and intellectual life in the 15th century. Erasmus praised Agricola's work throughout his writings. No less than fifty testimonies from Erasmus and his correspondents are presented here. This edition of sources supplements the volume of Agricola's letters (BLN, 2002) and is preceded by an expert survey of all biographical information now at our disposal. Thus it fills a gap in our knowledge of a great man of letters, while correcting a number of persistent misconceptions (concerning the year of Agricola's birth, for instance).

Les actes de la table ronde se fondent sur une définition large du terme 'humanistes' et sur la prise en compte de l'insertion de ces derniers dans un contexte social. En outre, nous souhaitons élargir la périodisation traditionelle (fine du XIVe-début du XVIe siécle) et envisager la question dès le XIIIe siècle. Cette proposition vise à reprendre la question des rapports des humanistes avec la tradition des dictatores, afin de réexaminer la question des relations entre 'litterati laici' et 'litterati clerici'. C'est pourquoi le point de départ choisi est plutôt celui d'une 'culture humaniste' naissant de l'apparition des litterati laici qui se confrontent à la culture ecclésiastique: une confrontation qui ne doit pas être lue en terme d'opposition ou de collaboration, mais plutôt de féconde émulation et de continuel va et vient dans des contextes sociaux et culturels à reconstruire.

Mostly remembered for his library and for his biblical criticism, Isaac Vossius (1618-1689) played a central role in the early modern European world of learning. Taking his cue from the unlikely bedfellows Joseph Scaliger and René Descartes, Vossius published on chronology, biblical criticism, optics, African geography and Chinese civilization, while collecting, annotating and selling one of the century’s most precious libraries. He was appointed an early Fellow of the Royal Society, and moved in the circles which later gave rise to the Académie Royale des Sciences. Together with Christiaan Huygens, he was considered the Dutch Republic’s foremost student of nature. In this volume, a range of authors analyse Vossius’ participation in the full spectrum of the Republic of Letters, much of which has sadly been written out of the history of both scholarship and science.
